What IS CUPPING?
Cupping massage is a homeopathic therapy that lifts the muscle tissue into a cup thereby comfortably pulling and stretching it away from the bone. The application has immediate effects as it encourages blood circulation to nourish the tissue with oxygen and nutrients.
As the cup pulls stagnant blood out of the tissue, enriched blood begins to stream into the area releasing adhesions and built up scar tissue, enhancing circulation, joint mobility, soft tissue release and cellular regeneration.
The overall effect of cupping treatments assists the cellular body to develop new blood vessels called neo-vascularization. This is why cupping is REGENERATIVE and maintains consistent results of successful treatments!
When multiple cups are placed around the injured area it will stretch the connective tissue and fascia for increased range of motion.
The after effects can often have a "bruise like" appearance in the injured/unhealthy tissue; this in fact is diagnostic, and the deeper-darker the discoloring, indicates exactly where the issue lies.
This discoloration diminishes over several days depending on severity and is almost never painful. After just a few cupping treatments the tissue becomes healthy again and the discolorations happen less and less or not at all.
Cupping has a wonderful detoxifying effect on the body and provides a major “house cleaning” as it systematically pulls toxins to the surface for the lymphatic system to discard.
When receiving cupping therapy, the healing process can be shortened by weeks, even months, and is why its efficacy and popularity have been trending in high demand!
Before and your cupping treatment
Prior to your cupping session, it is beneficial to drink lots of room temperature water, get plenty of rest, avoid caffeine, alcohol, sugary foods and drinks, and eat less or no processed foods. This will assist the body in adjusting, flushing, and processing the treatment.
After your cupping session you should avoid exposure to cold, wet, and/or windy weather conditions, hot showers, baths, saunas, hot tubs and aggressive exercise for 24 hours. These recommendations will minimize any side effects (nausea, headaches, and light-headed-ness) that are common during detoxification initiated by cupping therapy.
Please remember that side effects are most intense when beginning to receive cupping treatments, and lessen dramatically as your body becomes accustomed to cumulative treatments.
Cupping may leave marks or skin discolorations, called petechia. It is important to note that this is the therapeutically desired effect. These marks do not hurt and are not bruises, rather indicators that toxins or excess fluids in our system have been moved from the deeper tissue layers to the surface. This allows fresh oxygenated blood to nourish and heal the underlying areas. The color and pattern of the marks depends on the overall health of the underlying tissue. If there is no stagnation present, the color will be only a light pink mark which disappears in a few minutes to a couple of hours. In areas with injury or disease, the color will vary from bright red to speckled or even purple. Marks can last anywhere from three days to a week, depending on your water intake and activity level. Sites where there is old trauma or injury may require multiple cupping treatments to remove all stagnation. You will find in follow up treatments the marks will be visibly lighter and lighter as the pathogens are systemically removed from the body.
